Head Coach/High Performance Squad
Tim Mulvihill is a Silver License/Level 5 ASCA
coach who relocated in June 2016 from Boston (USA) to take up the
position of Head Coach of the Bayside Swimming Club. He is
responsible for the strategic and operational direction of the
squad coaching and training program at Bayside Aquatics. Tim is
also the primary coach of the Bayside Swimming Club High
Originally from Brisbane, Tim has spent six out of the last nine
years as the Director of Competitive Swimming at the South Shore
YMCA just south of Boston. In between his coaching role in the USA,
Tim helped form the Logan Vikings Swimming Club (QLD) in 2009 as
well as the Brisbane Grammar Swimming Club (QLD) in 2005 and Marist
College Ashgrove Swimming Club (QLD) in 1999.
In all of his coaching roles, Tim has developed swimmers to the
State, National and International levels. Amongst his proudest
coaching moments has been the development of national champions,
multiple age group record holders and he has consistently produced
swimmers in the top national age group rankings in both Australia
and the United States. His most satisfying team achievement was
winning the New England YMCA Championship in March of 2016 for the
first time in the fifty year history of the South Shore YMCA
Strypers swim team.
Tim's passionate coaching philosophy centers on the relentlessly
pursue excellence. As a former history teacher, Tim fully embraces
the concept of the student-athlete and has strong experience
in helping swimmers further their swimming journey in the NCAA
college swimming system. In his time with Bayside, Tim has been
instrumental in emphasizing a curriculum and coaching hierarchy

Tim has been recently appointed as a coach on the Swimming
Victoria's Performance Pathway
Progam. He is a 2017 recepient of the Age Group Coaching Achievment
Award presented by Swimming Victoria for the club's
results at the 2017 Age National Championships. Tim has also been
appointed to Swimming Victoria's Competition & Pathways
Committee and was voted to the board of the
Victorian chapter of the
Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers
recently, Tim gratiously accepted the position of Victorian Womens Head
Coach for the 2018
State Teams Competition.
Tim loves coaching Bayside Swimming Club and living in Melbourne
with his wife Carly, son Andrew and daughter Evelyn.
Performance Squad Coach
Brad Smith recently joined the team at Bayside Swimming Club after an extensive coaching career at Waterlions Swimming Club Victoria.
Whilst most of Brad’s coaching has been based in Victoria, he has also coached interstate between 1996 – 1998, at Pioneer Swim Club in Mackay Queensland. Brad joined as Head Coach at Squidline Swimming Club at Harold Holt Memorial pool in Malvern Victoria, until 2002, when he began coaching the National Development and State Squads at Waterlions Swimming Club at Haileybury College in Keysborough, Victoria.
Throughout Brad’s career he has proudly been responsible for the successful development of swimmers from Learn-To-Swim up to National Age level.
Brad’s position at Bayside Swimming Club as Senior Assistant involves the development of Performance Squad, along with playing a key role in developing our development squad programs.
State Squad Coach
Kiele has been a competitive swimmer with Bayside Swimming club
from 2008 to 2015 and swam the 200 butterfly at the 2014 Australian
In 2013, she started teaching swimming to younger children and has
now transitioned to coaching competitive squads. She is qualified
Australian Swimming teacher in infant and preschool aquatics and
competitive swimming and is looking to complete her Bronze licence
Kiele is studying a Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University and is
in an advanced nursing program with Epworth Healthcare.
Robert 'Butch' Butcher
State Squad Coach
Butch has been coaching for over twenty five years and joined Bayside in 2013.
He currently possess a bronze level coaching accreditation (ASCTA) and enjoys the process of preparing his State Squad chargers for the challenge of higher squad levels.
Butch is actively involved in lifesaving and swims masters at an extremely high level, representing Australia at the world championships for the last ten years. He has enjoyed his role as a coach on three Australian teams and is very proud of having helped many triathletes achieve their dream of competing at Kona or swimming the English Channel.
District Squad Coach
Nicholas was a nationally competitive swimmer with Bayside Swimming Club and at Mentone Grammar until he graduated in 2015.
In 2013 he transitioned to swim teaching and in 2015 to swim coaching. Nicholas is a qualified Swim Australia Teacher, Swim Australia Teacher of Competitive Swimming and has his CPR qualification. He currently coaches District Squad at Bayside Swimming Club.
Nicholas was accepted into a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Monash University and will begin studying in 2017.
Senior Coach (Melbourne Grammar)
Buddy Portier is a Gold License coach and works out of our Melbourne Grammar site.
Buddy is a former Australian representative of the Commonwealth Games, and is the former Head Swimming Coach and Sports Scientist as the Victorian Institute of Sport. He is also the former Australian Swim Team selector.
Assistant Coach (Melbourne Grammar)
David "Willow" Wilson is a Silver Licence coach and coaches out of our Melbourne Grammar site. He is a former Commonwealth Games and Olympic finalist and an old boy of Mentone Grammar. David was Australian Swimming Team manager from 2001-2012.
