Surrey Park Swimming Club's coaching program is led and overseen by Director of Coaching Ian Pope.

In addition the Club employs a team of qualified experienced assistant coaches.

Ian Pope

Ian Pope is a very experienced and highly regarded Platinum level coach.

Prior to starting in this role at Surrey Park, Ian was Head Coach of Melbourne Vicentre for 16 years. Over this time he developed Vicentre to best placed Club at Australian Age and Open Championships.

Ian has been selected as Victorian Coach of the year thirteen times. He has coached over fifty Olympic and World Championships medallists including Matt Welsh, Giaan Rooney, Michael Klim, Grant Hackett, Marieke Guehrer, Kotuki Ngawati and Matt Targett.  He has also been selected as an Australian Team Coach for two Olympics and six World Championships.

Ian’s “swimming career” started at Surrey Park in 1983. He progressed from learn to swim instructor to a full time swimming coach. He was the Club’s Head Coach from 1985 to 2001. Over this time Ian developed the Surrey Park program from learn to swim through to National level squads. He was instrumental in building the Club’s competitive program from 40 swimmers in just two lanes to over 200 swimmers. In 2001 following the 2000 Olympics Ian moved to Vicentre which was operating out of the MSAC facility.

Ian has a strong record in building successful swim schools such as those at Surrey Park and Korowa Anglican Girls School.  He has the knowledge and relationship building skills necessary for developing, improving and expanding learn to swim and competitive swimming programs.

Ian also has a strong record in mentoring and developing the coaches who work alongside him. His vast technical knowledge and experience is a wonderful opportunity for the Surrey Park coaches to develop their skills to the highest level.  Coaches that have previously worked with Ian are now having their own success recognised nationally and internationally.

Brett Cassidy

State Senior and State Junior Coach

Surrey Park Swimming Club welcomed Brett Cassidy to its coaching staff as of 2nd January.

Brett is a Bronze Licensed coach and an Austswim qualified instructor.

He was previously the State Coach at Bayside Swimming Club. Prior to this he worked for 3 years at the Canberra International Sport and Aquatic Centre, as an assistant Coach for the Ginninderra Swimming Club under former Olympic Coach Jim Fowlie.

Brett is a graduate of the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Sport Coaching and Exercise Science.

Brett will be the primary coach of the Club’s State Junior and Senior State Squads and assist with coaching the Club’s other squads.

Hayley Myers

State Development and Junior Squad Coach

Hayley is a Bronze Licensed coach and an Austswim qualified instructor.

Hayley competed at State level swimmer for both Warragul and more recently Surrey Park. She moved to Melbourne to attend University for years ago and is also working for Surrey Park as an instructor and customer service officer. In addition she shared the Swim School Manager’s role when the Manager was on leave for Term 3.

Hayley is now the primary coach of Surrey Park's State Development and Junior Gold and Green Squads. In addition she oversees the transition of swimmers from Development Squad into Junior Blue and Aqua Squads, the first level in Surrey Park's competitive squad program. Hayley also assists with coaching of the Club’s other competitive squads

Georgie Hawkins

Surrey Park welcomed Georgie Hawkins to its coaching staff as of Monday 26th February.

Georgie is a former Surrey Park squad swimmer who represented the Club at National and State levels.

Over the last couple of years Georgie has been working as an instructor with Surrey Park’s learn to swim program.

Georgie is the primary coach of Surrey Park's Junior Blue and Junior Aqua Squads and also takes Development Squad, the highest level in Surrey Park's learn to swim program. She will also be assisting with coaching of the Club’s other competitive squads.

Mun Lee

Junior Squad Coach

Mun is a Bronze Licensed coach and an Austswim qualified instructor.

Mun started swimming with Surrey Park at the age of four and progressed from Learn to Swim into the Club's Competitive Squads. At the age of 13 he competed at the Australian Age Championships for the first time.

After he finished secondary school, Mun spent four years the USA swimming and attending college at Boston University. Now Mun is back in Melbourne  doing post graduate studies in Speech Pathology at University and also teaching and coaching at Surrey Park. 

Mun is the primary coach of Surrey Park's Junior Blue Squad and also takes Development Squad, the highest level in Surrey Park's learn to swim program. Mun also assists with coaching of the Club’s other competitive squads.
