Age championship wrap up!

Age championship wrap up!

Though well covered on Facebook throughout the event by coaches Gus and Jack, we thought we’d take the opportunity to wrap up and summarise Swimming Victoria’s biggest Age based event on the season calendar.

Conducted over six days between the 10th & 15th December 2017, the age championship is a test of speed and endurance as the swimmers not only battle competitors in morning heats followed by night finals, there are early starts and late finishes and the ever-changing elements and conditions in which they compete. The swimmers endured cold days, extreme heat and a pool malfunction that delayed one night’s finals until very late into the evening.

The Flyers were well represented by 13 female swimmers Hope Backx, Tegan Backx, Bella Dew, Helena Herman, Charlee Lycett, Lauren McCauley, LilidhRuth McDonald, Mia Miles, Lily Newman, Charlotte Simmons, Cordelia Sweeney, Katrina Ward & Mia Yeo and 7 male competitors William Bowden, Jackson Lazzar, Ryan Longden, Logan Marshall, Brayden Miles, Callum Miles & Timothy Nguyen across all strokes and distances and a range of relay swims.

With the changing of time the Flyers familiar names of Howgate, Waterfall & Howe have been replaced by a new generation keen to retain the Flyers tradition of a top ten Victorian points finish and they didn’t let coaches Gus and Jack down.

There were many swimmers competing in their first LC Age championships, lots of PB’s, some inspiring relay swims and numerous finalists and medallists. The Flyers Club finished 10th overall on aggregate points and 9th Victorian club which is a great effort and congratulations go to coaches Gus and Jack considering the changing demographic of the club.

While points and medals are great, it is important to acknowledge the PB’s of our swimmers and make mention of some great and courageous efforts over the week. Two of our swimmers Jackson & Charlotte returned from a heavy & successful week of competition at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide in the week prior to Age Championships and it was a mighty effort for them to return and to compete so well for the club. Helena Herman is a great improver who goes from strength to strength and backed up her short course & sprints performance by reaching another state final in the 100 fly. Mia Miles provided the biggest shock of the meet in the 11&U 100 backstroke swimming a huge PB and making the state final at only 9 years of age.
