Flyers sprinting at MSAC
It was a solid turnout for Flyers as 32 Flyers swimmers contested 91 individual events at the Victorian State Sprints at MSAC on Sat 6th to Sunday 7th February.
It was the first big meet for the Junior Swimmers since State Long Course in December, while the Senior group were fired up and ready to go coming off the State Open championships in late January.
It was great to see some of our younger swimmers like 9 year olds’ Timmy Nguyen and Austin Degg and 10 year olds Kai Marshall and Nia Evans along with up and comer Ryan Longden compete in their first state sprint event. Also in their first sprint event were not so young 13 year old Oscar Riley and 15 year old Ethan Snooks with the rapidly improving Oscar looking to make finals.
Saturday Heats
Saturday morning kicked off with the heats for the 13 and under age groups followed by the 14 to 19 year olds in the afternoon session, with and all finals following in suit on Sunday. The morning session saw some great PB’s from Rose Bentley, Tegan Backx, Ryan Longden, Kai Marshall, Cordelia Sweeney and Timmy Nguyen. In the afternoon session Tom Cook, Rhemmy Gibbs, Kurt Hendrickson, Jake Marchant, Scarlett Murdoch, Roman Nestoriwskyj, Caitlin Robinson, Corey Snyders and Ethan Snooks punched out some impression PB swims.
Sunday Finals
Sarah Bresnahan, Rose Bentley & Logan Marshall were unlucky to miss finals and diligently performed the most frustrating task in swimming; the emergency. Overall thirteen (13) Flyers Swimmers reached twenty five (25) finals bringing home eight (8) medals including 2 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze.
Special mention to the usual suspects in Sam Howe (3 finals) winning gold in the 50 free, Harry Waterfall gold in the 50 back and Adam Howgate (3 finals) who is always in the thick of medal action. The strength of the U13 boys was on show with three finalists (Jackson, Oscar & Daniel) in the 50 Fly and representation in each final with Jackson the only Flyer to reach all 4 finals and Daniel Cooke reaching 3 finals. Quiet achiever Charlotte Simmons again performed well to medal in the backstroke and Saturday's Birthday boy Brayden Miles did the dreaded age group jump but still managed to be amongst the medal action. Our inside source tells us Jackson's determination to reach his goal of a sub 27 second 50 free and all four finals may have had something to do with a deal with mum that promised a Provincia Ice Cream treat at Safety Beach on the way home from the meet if achieved. We hope you enjoyed it Jacko!
