State Championships Update - Day 1

Despite some overcast and often cold weather, the first day of State Championships provided some rays of sunshine for Surrey Park.   It is the first time in several years that the Club had so many swimmers (a total of 12) participating in individual finals on the first night of competition. During the prelims there were many good swims and numerous PBs.

Finalists included:
  • Alexandra Good
  • Leo Wong
  • Bethany Robertson
  • Lucy Smithson
  • Hamish McDougall
  • Millie Simpson
  • Sarah Martin
  • Sam Warrick
  • Sebastian Cumins
  • Alisha McNamara
  • Cara Davidson
  • Tess Stevens
In the first event of the night, Alex Good pushed home to snare a bronze medal in the Girls 12 years 100m Backstroke. The excitement continued into the next event when we welcomed our newest State Champion when Leo Wong blitzed the field to claim gold in the Boys 12 years 100m Backstroke.
Lucy Smithson soon joined the medal winners when she grabbed as silver in the Girls 14 years 800m Freestyle, collecting a National Age Qualifying Time along the way.
Not long after this, Alex decided she liked the colour gold so much she left the remainder of the field in her wake with an impressive win in the Girls 12 years 200m Butterfly. The night wasn’t over for Alex as she was soon back on the dais collecting a bronze medal for third Victorian in the Girls 12 years 100m Freestyle.
Our boys Sebastian Cumins and Sam Warrick decided to fire up the engine room in the 1500m Freestyle. Sebastian took silver in the 14 years event and claimed another National Age Qualifying time and Sam took gold in the 15 years event with a (TBC) Victorian Record for his age group.
